French Adjectives The Words You Want
This is a list of adjectives, the ones that author
Tim Green says are the type that usually come least easily to
hand when you want them. His book is Harraps French in the
Real World, and sadly, its out of print. I would love to support
Mr. Green directly by buying new copies, but they can only be found
on used book sites.
The list is alphabetized according to the french;
I believe it would be more useful to the English speaker if it followed
the alphabet from the English words. Ive tried to memorize them
by covering the french with my hand and going down the list in a random
(aléatoire) order. Many of these words are not that common in
spoken french, but they will refine your powers of description; for
example, it will now be possible to shade your use of the word sad
without having to talk more in order to explain yourself. And once again
we find that many of the words are the same or similar in English, but
are perhaps your second choice, such as prudent for careful,
or bizarre for strange.
The catagorizations may be confusing; also, I dont
have the accent grave on this computer.
